KAWI Ubud’s Bagus Aribowo Takes Over the Bar at Makan Place

Following the success of last year’s bar takeover, Makan Place welcomes another creative force behind the bar. Recently recognised among Indonesia’s Best 20 Bars by Tatler Asia in 2025, Bagus Aribowo of KAWI Ubud brings his thoughtful approach to mixology, where traditional Balinese flavours meet refined bartending techniques.

This one-night-only takeover will take place on Sunday, 17 May 2026, from 5 PM to 9 PM.

For the evening, the spirit of KAWI Ubud arrives in the heart of Legian. Bagus presents a curated selection of cocktails that highlight Indonesia’s rich ingredients, with a focus on locally crafted liqueurs. In collaboration with Palapa, highlights include Palapa Nutmeg Liqueur and Opalm Coconut Liqueur, seamlessly incorporated into each creation. Through his craft, Bagus offers a fresh take on familiar flavours, rooted in heritage, yet expressed with a modern sensibility.

The takeover offers an intimate bar-side experience, where guests are invited to engage with the stories behind each cocktail. Bagus will showcase three of his signature creations, including Turmeric, a cocktail inspired by the traditional herbal drink jamu, infused with lemongrass and mace, ingredients often associated with their natural, revitalising qualities. Staying true to his celebration of local flavours, he also incorporates house-made sparkling coconut water and a subtle touch of Indonesian confectionery, adding depth and character to each drink.

To complete the experience, guests can enjoy Bagus’s cocktails alongside Makan Place’s à la carte menu, featuring a selection of Indonesian and international dishes, including the signature Balinese Crackling Pork Knuckle. Designed for sharing and savouring, the pairing brings together vibrant flavours, crafted cocktails, and the pleasure of good company. The evening is complemented by a live acoustic performance, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
