At the recent Bali Ocean Days 2 day conference at the Intercontinental Bali Resort, I had the privilege of leading the stage and sharing three powerful keys that Indonesia can offer the world. These principles are deeply rooted in the country’s culture and philosophy, offering valuable lessons for businesses, communities, and individuals across the globe.
To visualize these keys, imagine a triangle with two foundational sides that uphold the third:
- Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity)
This is Indonesia’s national motto, and its meaning—Unity in Diversity—reflects a society built on mutual respect and inclusivity. With its rich diversity of over 700+ cultures and 500+ languages, Indonesia thrives on embracing differences. In a globalized world, fostering unity through diversity is more critical than ever for creating inclusive societies and future-ready businesses.
- Gotong Royong (Collective Community Spirit)
Gotong Royong refers to the spirit of a community coming together to solve shared challenges. It’s the embodiment of collaboration, where everyone contributes for the common good. This philosophy represents Bhinneka Tunggal Ika in action, showcasing how unity drives progress. Whether applied to business or social enterprises, Gotong Royong can unlock collective potential and sustainable solutions.
- Tri Hita Karana (Three Paths to Prosperity)
Tri Hita Karana, a Balinese philosophy, was shared with world leaders at the G20 Summit in Bali. It teaches balance in three essential areas:
- Human to God: Respect for culture, customs, traditions, and spirituality.
- Human to Nature: Embracing regenerative systems, policies, and sustainable practices.
- Human to Human: Distributing prosperity to the community it serves.
For businesses, this philosophy offers a framework to evaluate the impact of their projects or initiatives. Ask yourself:
- How does your business honour cultural values and traditions?
- Are your practices environmentally responsible and sustainable?
- Does your business create prosperity for the community?
Even if your business, initiative or project doesn’t score a perfect 10 in all areas, continuous improvement is key. Tri Hita Karana provides a foundation for building “Conscious Businesses” that prioritize both purpose and profit.
Conscious Business in Action
During an impromptu podcast recording with Janine Jakob, founder of High Performance for Executives and Multicultural Teams APAC-West, I delved into the concept of conscious business. Our discussion centered on doing business in Indonesia—a nation of 17,000+ islands, nearly 300 million people, and an average age of 27—and how embracing these philosophies can lead to sustainable success.
Janine’s podcast, Business Meets Life, explores the intersection of entrepreneurship and meaningful living. Our episode will air soon, diving deep into Indonesia’s unique business environment and how businesses can embrace conscious growth.
Embracing Indonesia’s Gifts
Indonesia’s lessons of unity, collaboration, and balanced prosperity offer powerful guidance for businesses and individuals striving for sustainable success. By embracing Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Gotong Royong, and Tri Hita Karana, we can build a more inclusive, resilient, and purpose-driven future.
