This Ghost Hotel is located near Lake Beratan. The construction of the hotel was in 1990 and the story goes that it was suddenly abandoned on the eve of the opening. There are several spooky stories about why the hotel has been abandoned. The actual history of the hotel is difficult to trace, most likely construction has stalled and never been restarted. But, still, there is a small chance that this hotel is being haunted over the years. Spooky!
History
There would have been a ghost during the construction of the hotel who had horribly killed all workers involved in the construction of the hotel. Another (and most talked-about story) claims that the hotel – with employees and guests – disappeared overnight, leaving demons behind. Also, there is a story that the real estate developer is claimed to be corrupt in business practices and subsequently cursed. This curse led to him and his hotel going bankrupt. This story does seem to come closest to reality.
The accuracy and history of this hotel cannot be officially established. The construction probably started in the 90s by the son of former Indonesian President Suharto: Tommy Suharto as a pet project. Tommy Suharto was sentenced to prison for ordering the murder of an Indonesian judge. This judge had found him guilty of charges concerning corruption. Probably when this happened, the construction of the hotel was ceased and has never been resumed.
Entrance
First of all, it is hard to find an entrance. The fact that it is a private property, it is illegal to visit this hotel and its surrounding area. A warung, located next to the front of the hotel is where you have to be. The owners of this warung will not approach you, so the initiative has to come from you. When you approach them, they will let you in for a small fee. 30 minutes is the maximum time you can stroll around the property. This is because they want to have a good overview of who’s in, in case of the police stopping by. In the end, the police will probably never stop by, but well, we have to admit the idea makes the experience a bit more exciting.
Downstairs
When you enter the hotel, you will notice it is indeed completely abandoned. The unripped nature, that imagines itself through the stones and structures, gives you a bit of a Chernobyl feeling when you enter the site. Downstairs you can visit parts of the hotel via the lobby. It is an empty hotel with no furniture. The construction of the hotel exudes high-end and luxury, so had the hotel not been abandoned, it would probably have been a spectacular overnight stop for elite guests. There are many leaks at the hotel and therefore you will notice that it has been empty for a long time. The drops of water you hear falling, the squeaky sounds of the building, the sounds of nature, and the rooms where there is less light, makes it a somewhat creepy experience.
Upstairs
Via the fairytale, surrounded by dragons, and nature-covered outside stairs, you reach at another part of the hotel. At the top of the stairs, you can enjoy a stunning view of the scenic nature that Bali has to offer towards the North. Through this part of the hotel, you can enter the basement. The wall beside the downgoing stairs to the basement is covered with different footprints up and down. Maybe these are footprints from people at the abandoned evening? Or from something supernatural? But for now, let us assume these have been put on the walls for an extra thriller effect for visitors. The basement is dark and has various whacky areas where you cannot see much to anything. Many visitors, therefore, choose not to enter these spaces. Just in case… well, you never know…
You can explore the hotel out of curiosity or interest in its history, or you can make a spooky ghost tour out of it. If you don’t prefer places hunted by supernatural stories, only the outside and surrounding area around the hotel are worth a visit. The unripped nature around the hotel gives a lovely and friendly twist to the whole.
