Gili Trawangan’s reputation is shifting, and Cocana Resort is the way to experience the island at its most refined.

For years, Gili T has been known for one kind of weekend, but that reputation is changing, and Cocana Resort is at the centre of the shift. An elevated, design-led destination on the island’s peaceful west coast, made for travellers who want the postcard without the party.

Cocana Resort, a beachfront luxury resort on Gili Trawangan, opened in December 2023 and has quickly become the island’s benchmark for luxury stays. Recognised with the 2025 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, the resort is built around a simple premise: that Gili Trawangan deserves a property worthy of its natural setting. It sits on the quieter sunset-facing shoreline, with the lively centre of the island a short bicycle ride away whenever the mood calls for it.

Standing out among other options on the island, dining at Cocana is layered, and unmistakably the new face of Gili T. Pacifica Restaurant runs all-day Mediterranean from an open kitchen and live pizza station, served across shaded and sunlit terraces. Alongside it, Pacifica Pool Suite keeps the kitchen running poolside until dusk, with sunbeds and cabanas built for long, unhurried afternoons. While at the beachfront, Cocana Sunset Club brings open-fire cooking to the shoreline, with grilled meats, fresh-caught seafood, tapas-style sharing plates and craft cocktails, all served as the sky turns and Mount Agung sits on the Bali horizon across the water.

The most anticipated of the three is still to come. In August 2026, Sensei Ikan opens within the resort, an intimate twelve-seat Japanese omakase speakeasy, where the chef leads guests course by course through an immersive evening unlike anything else across the islands.

The accommodations span the full spectrum of an island stay, with 1- to 3-bedroom private pool villas and swim-up lagoon suites, all in contemporary tropical style, with natural materials, open layouts, and generous light throughout. For couples and solo travellers, the one-bedroom villas and lagoon suites offer privacy and intimacy in equal measure, with the lagoon suites particularly distinctive, where suites opens directly onto the resort’s central pool through a swim-up terrace or a private balcony. For families and groups, the two and three bedroom villas bring scale and seclusion, with private pools and indoor-outdoor living designed for longer stays.

Later this year, the Deluxe Lagoon introduces a new adults-only wing to the resort, set around its own private lagoon pool and designed for guests after something quieter and more secluded still.

Wellness is taken just as seriously at SAO Spa, the largest sanctuary of its kind on Gili Trawangan, laid out across two floors and designed as an open, flowing space where natural light and sea breezes are part of the experience. The bamboo massage and papaya wrap are the signatures, supported by a gym at the entrance and complimentary yoga three mornings a week.

Beyond the spa, daytime fills itself easily. The house reef sits a few steps from the beach, and Cocana can organise turtle excursions, paddleboarding, private boat charters, and inter-island crossings to Gili Meno and Gili Air.

For those staying longer, Lombok is ten minutes across the water, with golf, diving, traditional Sasak villages, the waterfalls and crater lakes below Rinjani all within easy reach.

The format is made for a weekend. Ninety minutes by fast boat from Bali, two or three nights ideal, slow mornings, long lunches, spa, sunset, dinner that drifts.
