Hong Kong’s “Magic Team” Defies Odds at ASMO 2025 Finals in Bali

Asian Science and Mathematics Olympiad (ASMO) 2025 Finals concluded that past Friday, December 13, transforming Bali into a vibrant hub of international intellect. While students from across the continent gathered to test their logic, one specific squad from Hong Kong captured the headlines, taking home the coveted “Best Team award for the China region”.

The winning team, representing Math Sense—a chained Hong Kong brand renowned for cultivating elite mathematics competitors—has been dubbed the “Magic Team” by judges and spectators alike.

A David and Goliath Victory

What made the victory on December 13 remarkable was the composition of the team. Competing at the Grade 9 level, the squad included two students significantly younger than their peers. Don Ng Sheung Tung, a Grade 5 student from Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong, and Kolson Mak Wai Hang, a Grade 8 student from Hon Wah College, both “played up” to challenge the difficult Grade 9 curriculum.

They were anchored by Grade 9 veterans Jimce Ng Sheung Chit (Christian Alliance S. C. Chan Memorial College) and Team Captain Sky Ho Tsz Hang (Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School).

This lineup is no stranger to the podium. Three members—Don, Kolson, and Sky—recently secured the International Champion and First Runner-up titles at the IMOYA (International Mathematics Open for Young Achievers) 2025 – Team Category in Singapore in October. The fourth member, Jimce, is a serial gold medalist, holding championship titles in major contests like SIMSO, HKIMO, and EAIMO.

Strategy Over Age

Team Captain Sky Ho Tsz Hang emphasized that their success on competition day was due to a rigorous adherence to strategy and trust, instilled by their tutor, Mr. Leo Lee, and team leader, Miss Silvia So.

“Although my teammates and I have known each other for a long time, this team of four was a first-time combination,” said Sky. “How to have good teamwork was a large problem for us. Luckily, my teammates believed my instructions. During the competition, we had a clear division of labor… We tried our best to write down the steps of each question and finished as many problems as we had the talent to do.”

The Spirit of Cooperation

The pressure of the Finals was intense, but the younger members rose to the occasion.

“The problems were really challenging,” admitted Don Ng Sheung Tung, the Grade 5 prodigy. “But they helped me get better at solving tough questions. In our team project, all of us worked together, encouraged each other, and learned from one another’s strengths.”

Kolson Mak Wai Hang echoed this sentiment, highlighting how the team overcame initial nerves during the December 13 event. “At first, my teammates and I felt nervous about the tough problems. However, we soon found that our team’s strength helped us overcome all challenges,” Kolson stated. “Even when decisions weren’t perfect, we never gave up.”

For Jimce Ng Sheung Chit, the experience in Bali went beyond just formulas. “This competition taught me the true meaning of teamwork,” Jimce remarked. “By working together, my teammates and I combined our strengths to solve difficult problems that seemed impossible at first.”

Looking to the Future

The success of the Math Sense team highlights the growing trend of specialized competitive training in Hong Kong. All four members expressed deep gratitude to their coach in Math Sense as well as their supportive parents.

As the event wrapped up in Bali, organizers announced that the ASMO Finals 2026 will be hosted in Macau, China.

For now, these four students return to Hong Kong not just as math elites, but as a testament to what young minds can achieve when they work together.
