Tucked away in the serene highlands of North Bali, Munduk Moding Plantation (MMP) offers a unique blend of opulence and sustainability. As a distinguished luxury resort in Bali, MMP not only immerses guests in the island’s stunning natural beauty but also takes them on a journey through Bali’s rich coffee heritage, with its exclusive organic coffee grown right on the estate.

Munduk Moding Plantation’s Coffee Experience: From Harvest to Cup

At the core of Munduk Moding Plantation is Munduk Coffee, their in-house coffee brand, known for cultivating some of the finest coffee beans in North Bali. Here, guests can explore the entire coffee-making process, from the initial harvest to the moment the coffee reaches their cup. Their coffee cherries are meticulously handpicked at the peak of ripeness, a process that typically takes place between July and September, requiring multiple rounds of harvest to ensure the best quality beans. Each year, around 1,500 kg of dry beans are produced.

Munduk Organic Coffee Plantation was created through a partnership between Balinese and European visionaries, united by a mission to revive premium coffee farming in Bali’s central highlands. This endeavour not only fosters sustainable livelihoods for local farmers but also protects the environment and empowers the local community. At MMP, guests are invited to visit their modern roasting and processing facilities, where they can participate in coffee cupping and roasting workshops. These interactive sessions are part of our MMP Experience Programme, but customised workshops can be arranged for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of speciality coffee.

Environmentally Friendly Coffee Farming at MMP

Their commitment to sustainable coffee production extends far beyond the cup. The organic farming practices at Munduk Moding Plantation offer numerous environmental benefits. Shade trees, essential for protecting coffee plants from direct sunlight, also serve as natural water reservoirs and prevent soil erosion during the rainy season. These trees support a thriving ecosystem, attracting diverse birdlife and insects, which visitors can observe throughout their stay.

MMP’s altitude—1,230 meters above sea level—provides an ideal microclimate for coffee cultivation. The plantation’s coffee trees are descended from those first brought to Bali by the Dutch in the 19th century. Historical records show that the Munduk and Gobleg regions were once Bali’s leading coffee producers, with coffee being transported by horseback to lower-altitude villages. While coffee farming saw a decline in the late 20th century due to falling global prices, MMP is working to restore the area’s coffee legacy by promoting organic farming practices and helping local farmers secure better prices through more direct trade routes.

Coffee Supporting Community Development

Munduk Moding Plantation’s dedication to sustainability extends to community development. A portion of their coffee sales supports local projects and initiatives through the Munduk Foundation, which funds community enhancements and provides educational scholarships to local students. By empowering the community, MMP ensures that the positive impact of coffee farming is shared with those who live in the surrounding area.

Savour Bali’s Best Coffee at Munduk Moding Plantation

Guests of MMP can enjoy a range of organic coffee varieties made from their Kintamani Arabica beans, including espresso blends perfect for crafting cappuccinos, lattes, and more. For those seeking a rare treat, MMP also offers wild “luwak” coffee, known as one of the world’s most exclusive coffees. This highly sought-after coffee is sourced from beans that have passed through the digestive system of the Asian palm civet (luwak), which eats the ripest coffee cherries as part of its diet. MMP proudly serves only ethically sourced wild luwak coffee, ensuring that no animals are harmed or caged in the process.

Munduk Moding Plantation is not just a luxury resort in Bali—it’s a gateway to exploring the island’s coffee culture and a model for sustainable tourism. Whether you’re enjoying a cup of freshly brewed organic coffee while overlooking Bali’s lush landscapes or engaging in an immersive coffee workshop, MMP offers a rich and rewarding experience that nourishes both body and soul.

For an unforgettable stay that combines luxury with eco-conscious living, book your getaway at Munduk Moding Plantation and embark on a coffee journey like no other.
