Finding a suitable side job next to your studies in Bali may feel like a difficult task. This is because the average salary in Bali is low. For example, if you compare the catering and hospitality industry in Bali with Western countries, you will not earn the necessary income in the Balinese catering and hospitality industry to make a living as a student. Because of this, you have to look for alternatives as a student. Many of these alternatives require to invest some money and/or time in advance. But don’t worry, these investments will pay off in the future. Below we have listed some suitable sectors and side jobs for a student in Bali.

Online Marketer
Online marketing -also known as digital marketing or internet marketing- has an important role in the development of mass marketing to personal direct marketing. The personal approach is becoming increasingly important in the marketing world to be successful. As the online market continues to grow and is indispensable on the most Instagrammable island in the world, it is advisable to gain some knowledge about online marketing. With this knowledge, you could work for one or more companies during your free hours on assignments as a part-time content manager, e-commerce employee, or multimedia designer.

Freelance Writer
Is writing your true passion? If it is, Bali is the Walhalla, because it offers all possible inspiration for a writer. Approach one of the many companies in the tourism industry in (online) writing and media, and maybe you can mean something for them with your creative ideas. Isn’t it a dream coming true if you could combine sharing your personal life and findings of Bali with your side job!? Your English is quickly above average for Indonesian standards, so don’t be afraid to take the risk and approach a few companies that have your interests.

Dive Instructor
Some people realise after their first dive that diving means more to them than just a hobby. Throw yourself into the deep (literally), and do a trial dive to find out whether you are Bali’s little mermaid. After you have completed your PADI course or if you have already achieved it, you could work part-time as a diving instructor at one of the many dive companies in Bali. As a diving instructor, you can share your passion for the rich underwater world around the island with tourists and other divers.

Foreign Language Teacher
Teaching English to students abroad is the most popular and common way of making money while travelling or staying abroad. Almost everywhere in Asia, there is a demand for English teachers. Experience is not required and if you speak and write proper English, you could start as a TEFL teacher. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The TEFL certificate is a certificate that you must successfully achieve. You can achieve this certificate via a part-time or full-time online course. This course may be an investment of your time, but on the other hand, it is also an investment in your future. Because after this, you can work as an English teacher in addition to your studies and perhaps in Bali or other places in the future.

After a small detour in obstetrics and biology, Anne found her true passion for communication. She decided to exchange the figures, formulas and molecules for letters, organisations and design where she first was able to express her creativity in theatre and writing. Various committees with functions that are in line with communication, and her position as Public Relations board member at the Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival, allowed her to already cast a glance on what’s important in communication and writing at young age.
