Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelagic nation with over 17,000 islands and the second-longest coastline globally, is on the cusp of strong period of maritime development. With global accolades naming it one of the most beautiful countries on earth, its natural wealth from Raja Ampat to Bali and beyond is no secret. But behind the postcards and paradise lies a deeper conversation about what it truly takes to responsibly unlock the further potential of maritime tourism in Bali and Indonesia-at-large.
The Opportunity On the Rise
Indonesia a G20 host nation, is an economic force open to investment in multiple sectors from resources, infrastructure, agriculture, medical and technology – it’s the third-largest adopter of Blockchain technology usage globally for instance. It is also home to one of the most diverse cultures on Earth (700+ languages, 500+ cultures), Indonesia’s blue economy presents a very strong opportunity. Particularly in Bali, where the eyes of the world of global tourism is firmly established. Tourism development in Bali is looking seaward, with conservation, sustainability and cultural preservation as foundational pillars.
Events such as G20 featuring Ocean 20 or O20, in the most recent years, Bali Ocean Days, powered by Sky Blue Sea Foundation, is helping to galvanize stakeholder’s government officials, sustainability advocates, private investors, and marine professionals to take action on the United Nations’ SDG #14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.
But to have the opportunity to succeed and avoid common pitfalls business integration to the local level is key.
“Market entry” such as company set up and legals opens the door but it’s successful “Business landing” incorporating “community support” that can walk you through it.
One of the Challenges: Offline Networks & Cultural Context
In Indonesia especially Bali the most critical networks are offline. They’re built on trust, timing, and a deep respect for local culture and business protocol.
In sectors like maritime tourism, where development requires aligning with government, local communities, interest groups, tourism stakeholders, and even sacred water zones – this can’t be done alone but through aligned connected and responsible local networks. This is especially true for marina infrastructure which is also beginning to develop in Bali look such as Benoa and the surrounding areas where reclaimed land is the setting the scene for an important Marina development.
Personal pathway the Ocean
My own background in Maritime Tourism came almost three decades ago as a graduate in Leisure Studies (Waterbased) from The Maritime Institute of Higher Education (Warsash Campus) Southampton University. A broad introduction to the process of building and managing full-scale Marinas, from hydrographic surveying, awareness of seasonal impacts of nature – such as algal blooms, business, marketing and sales to boat handling (RYA Day Skipper) and the tort of negligence.
Road to working with HNWI market
The higher end of this market is driven by the wealthy and after graduating, I spent quality time in Italy engaging well-known celebrities including working on the MTV Music Awards in 1998 featuring Madonna. Over twenty years in Sydney working with industry leaders (public and private) such as Tourism Australia working again working with celebrities and high profile / net worth individuals.
After moving to Bali with my beloved and family. I continued to build these networks and cross pollinate them with Bali, other key cities in Indonesia, Australia and Hollywood whilst also engaging and developing complimentary skills such as five years consulting for the commercial real estate/tourism sector. During which time I had the opportunity to create and co-curate multiple key tourism projects (one featured the former Tourism & Creative economy Minister of Indonesia) wealthy real estate investors and senior Bali Tourism stakeholders at the Royal Palace of a dear friend and client.
Through our consultancy, have combined these skillsets and networks to facilitate “business landing” or integration for foreign and domestic companies (post market entry or “company setup”) into Tourism (Maritime and Medical), Real estate and technology. Recently, I was invited to join the board of management for one of Indonesia’s key Foundations working with the oceans here in Indonesia, mentioned above.
