Unfamiliar areas in Bali… Sounds impossible. Well, it depends on how you picture unfamiliarity here in Bali. If you see a place in Google Maps with more than a thousand reviews, you know it’s not a “virgin” place.
Less than that? Now that is untouched… or a hidden gem if you will. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a culture seeker, or a remote worker looking for a serene escape, these lesser-known areas promise a refreshing change from the usual Bali itinerary. Visit them while it’s still unheard of!
Tianyar Savanna, a piece of Africa in Bali
Beaches are too mainstream so we’re going to start the list with savanna. You heard right! Savanna as in a vast grass field.
Tianyar Savanna, located in the far northeast of Bali, offers something different from your usual Bali experience. Can be reached for a 2-3 hour drive from Denpasar, you will be presented with spectacular views of the vast land of Tianyar with Mount Agung in the background.
Some people might say there are not many activities to do in this barren land, but that’s not true. If you plan it right, there are many things you can do here, just with the right time and season.
If you’re visiting the place in the dry season, with no clouds in sight, you’re in for a picturesque view of the enchanting night sky. If it’s the rainy season, you’ll be mesmerised by the magnificent view of the savanna, spread out like a green carpet.
Tianyar savanna is best visited early in the morning for its sunrise or late in the afternoon if you want to camp for a night. There are many wild horses in the area, but again, they are wild so be careful.
The road to the savanna is challenging and a bit rough, but the view is worth it. Stick to the main road, don’t take the sketchy one and don’t shy away from taking your campervan here. Another thing to keep in mind is that there is no water around so take as much as you can before coming. Also, did we mention that this place is hot? Yep, so if you don’t like the heat, try to come here a bit late in the afternoon.
Buyan Lake
Another unfamiliar piece of beautiful nature in the north of Bali is Buyan Lake. Undoubtedly one of the best places for camping no one has ever heard of.
Another two hours drive from Denpasar, the lake is located in Buleleng, close to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. The lake offers many charms you will not find anywhere else in Bali.
You can take your bike here, along with camping gear and enjoy the panoramic view of the lake in the afternoon and morning. The sunrise reflecting the lake is just magnificent. You can even do some BBQ here with your friends if you like.
The atmosphere of nature, combined with the serene ripples of Buyan Lake and fresh air from the surrounding wilderness, creates an idyllic setting for camping enthusiasts seeking tranquillity. A great place to camp overnight and unwind.
Oh, and don’t forget about the monkey! You’ll find some around if you’re lucky.
Since the lake is surrounded by hills and lush greenery, it could be freezing cold at times, so bring a jacket.
Nungnung Waterfall
We’re going deeper into the wilderness with the last place…
Nungnung Waterfall is a magnificent piece of natural beauty you can find in Badung, north of Bali. Surrounded by forests, you have to climb more or less 500 steps to enjoy this massive and powerful waterfall.
Many tourists skip this place, so you can expect a serene place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the southern part of Bali. You’ll have a blast visiting this place. The sound of the water falling from the top is soothing in a unique way. You’ll also be overwhelmed by the beauty as you find yourself alone in nature.
If you’re looking for an adventurous and relaxing day trip, Nungnung Waterfall is definitely a must-visit. Just make sure you get a waterproof case for your phone because your phone will get soaked in no time by simply getting close to the waterfall.
Some people say the waterfall is only for those who are physically fit, but don’t let that discourage you from visiting the waterfall. It’s worth the climb, and it took only 15 minutes to climb from the parking lot. The entrance fee is also reasonably priced. Take a picture and it will speak for itself.
